The swinging #Pineapple . #Oil on Canvas. Oluwaseyi Alade Asher. 2014.
DESCRIPTION: This #painting is inspired by obscure dreams, which leave the dreamer wondering long and hard at what the #dream could mean. Such haunting dreams are usually an admixture of the ‘pedestrian #lifestyle of the dreamer’ (pineapple) and a stronger focal point (tugging #mermaids and runaway #fish ). The painting has a bright background of minute shapes altogether giving the impression of a #cobweb . These interlaced lines signify the connection between the elements of the dream even though each is in its own sphere of focus.
One could also interpret the dream as the ever insatiable desire to have just one more even when the ‘basin’ is full. The inability of the #fisherwoman to hold unto the fish hoarde she has already amassed is a pointer to the mistake many make in seeking out what they already have close by.
In the foreground is a purple #tree with twisted trunk and branches. The tree and its roots hover in space and a child lies amongst its purple cloudlike foliage dangling an invincible invitation to another #child on a woman’s back. The woman holds tightly to a #fishing rod which has, at its other end, hooked a massive scaly fish. Several mermaids observe with mixed expressions and one holds onto the giant fish. At the other end of the island, on which the fisherwoman holds sway, there are several escaping fishes from the basin she had placed them.
Having a branch all to itself, a big pineapple swings serenely from one of the twisted branches of the tree. It has a cheeky expression on its face as it watches the escaping fishes dive into the terrain of the mermaids.
