This movie is going to be overlooked, but I highly recommend you go see it. Written by Allison Schroeder & Theodore Melfi (director), the movie is centered around race and gender conflicts, and driven by the space race. The women, Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, are empowering. Their stories and their struggles can be difficult to watch, but the outcome is rewarding and uplifting. These are stories I had never known about. History only teaches us of the men inside the spaceships, and while it was valiant of them to risk their lives, seeing the story of those who made it possible for those men to get in those spaceships is even more extraordinary.
Cinematography wise, the movie was directed beautifully. Melfi used parallel shots to accentuate character arc and growth. And the use of actual footage from spaceship launches, JFK speeches, and MLK speeches was tasteful and effective.
There's so much to say about this movie, but you really just have to see it. It's well-researched, empowering, humorous, and informative. I'm happy I know these women's stories now.
