End grain Oak platters almost done 😊 Big old chaps, over 2ft long. Quite hefty too- I don't really trust the brittle nature of end grain in thin little dainty slices.
These are going to wing their way out as a customer order. As usual with this sort of thing, it's taken more time and finishing than expected, but it all adds to the pool of experience and hopefully some wisdom.
The end grain of most timber is so thirsty for penetrating finishes, and the ring porous structure of English Oak is especially keen, so it has taken a few coats to get a nice natural lustre on the surface.
I'm really happy with the way that the Fiddes hardwax oil has behaved, especially with some challenging temperatures in the workshop. It should be an easy and well behaved surface to maintain over the years.
